Google Search Console for Singapore SMEs: Beginner Setup and What to Actually Do With It
Google Search Console tells you exactly how Google sees your website — which queries trigger your pages, which pages are indexed, and what errors exist. It's free and takes 15 minutes to set up.
Google Search Console (GSC) is the closest thing to a direct line to Google about your website. It tells you exactly which queries your site appears for, which pages are indexed, what errors exist, and how your Core Web Vitals are performing. And it's completely free. Yet most Singapore SME owners have never logged in.
Setting up Google Search Console
- 01Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with your Google account
- 02Click "Add property" and enter your domain (e.g., shaminder.sg)
- 03Choose verification method: HTML tag (add to your website's <head>), Google Analytics (if already installed), or domain DNS verification (recommended)
- 04Submit your sitemap: go to Sitemaps > Add sitemap and enter yourdomain.sg/sitemap.xml
- 05Wait 48–72 hours for data to begin populating
The five reports that actually matter
1. Performance
Shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position for every query your site appeared for. This is gold: it shows you which keywords you're almost ranking for (position 8–15) that a small push could move to page 1.
2. Coverage
Shows which pages Google has indexed, which are excluded, and which have errors. "Valid" pages are indexed and fine. "Excluded" pages are not indexed — investigate why. "Error" pages have critical problems preventing indexing.
3. Core Web Vitals
Google's page experience metrics: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). Poor URLs hurt mobile rankings directly. Fix anything flagged as "Poor" immediately.
4. Sitemaps
Confirms whether your sitemap was submitted and how many URLs it discovered vs. how many are indexed. A large gap between discovered and indexed often indicates crawl budget or quality issues.
5. Links
Shows which external sites link to you (backlinks) and which of your internal pages link to each other. Useful for identifying link-building opportunities and internal link gaps.
The one GSC workflow to do every month
- 01Open Performance > Queries. Filter to queries where your average position is 8–20.
- 02These are your "almost ranking" terms — pages that just need a bit more optimisation to reach page 1.
- 03For each query, open the page it's ranking from, and improve the content: add more depth, use the keyword more naturally, add internal links.
- 04Return in 4–6 weeks and check if positions improved.
